Matt Harvey gets workmanlike win, thanks to Conforto show

Matt Harvey’s baby steps and Michael Conforto’s thunder were a perfect combination for the Mets on Tuesday.

Ideally, the Mets would have watched Harvey dominate the National League’s worst offensive team, but the control issues that have dogged their former ace all season in his return from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome were again prevalent. And yet, on a night Conforto smashed two home runs to move into a tie for the NL lead, Harvey endured five innings in the Mets’ 9-3 victory over the Padres to secure his first win in nearly six weeks.

The Mets won for the third time in four games on the homestand, but sustained another casualty as Jay Bruce exited the game in the sixth inning with back tightness.
