WASHINGTON -- Limited to the bench for most of this season, Mets outfielder Juan Lagares drew a starting assignment Saturday because the Nationals were using a left-handed pitcher. The side benefit? Lagares' Gold Glove defense.
The center fielder threw a 235-foot strike from center to home plate in the second inning, cutting down Brian Goodwin as he attempted to score from second on a Pedro Severino single. Lagares' throw arrived on the fly in plenty of time for catcher Travis d'Arnaud to corral it and place the tag on Goodwin.
