Justin Verlander agrees to 2-year, $66 million extension with Astros

Another big-time pitcher not named Jacob deGrom is getting an extension from his team.

The Houston Astros and ace Justin Verlander agreed Saturday to a two-year, $66 million contract extension through the 2021 season, according to Fox 26 TV in Houston.

The 36-year-old Verlander was the 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner and was 16-9 with a 2.52 ERA last season. He was heading into the final year of his contract. Verlander, known as an innings eater, also threw 214 innings last season and led the American League in strikeouts. He also helped lead Houston to the 2017 World Series title and was the MVP of the ALCS that year against the Yankees.
