It was worse than the Mets feared.
Juan Lagares will likely miss the rest of the season after completely tearing the plantar plate in his big toe. Lagares suffered the injury banging into the wall Wednesday chasing a Gio Urshela fly ball in the Mets’ loss to the Blue Jays.
Initial x-rays were negative, but an MRI exam revealed the extent of the injury.
The injury further weakens the Mets’ outfield after Yoenis Cespedes was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with a mild strain of his right hip flexor.
