NEW YORK -- Juan Lagares is getting another whirl at leading off for the New York Mets as manager Terry Collins tries to jumpstart his slumping offense.
Lagares previously had started only three times in the leadoff spot this season but had appeared there more regularly in recent seasons. He has a career .303 on-base percentage in 309 plate appearances as a leadoff hitter.
"I think this is a good challenge for Juan," Collins said before Wednesday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. "He's played very well lately. Certainly his numbers against left-handed pitching are very good.
