PORT ST. LUCIE — J.D. Davis was a nice extra player at the start of spring training who seemed destined to begin the season in the minor leagues, but then injuries happened to the Mets.
In a span of a few days early in camp, Jed Lowrie and Todd Frazier were sidelined, and neither has appeared yet in an exhibition game. And manager Mickey Callaway admitted Thursday it’s difficult to envision Lowrie or Frazier beginning the season with the club.
It has left the 25-year-old Davis in strong position to open the season with the Mets, giving the team a right-handed batter who can handle the corner-infield positions.
