Jason Vargas’ complete-game shutout propels Mets past Giants

Mickey Callaway filled out the lineup card. The Mets made sure his imprint on the game ended there.

Carrying a three-game losing streak built upon a pair of regrettable decisions to remove Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard prematurely from their respective outings, the Mets made life easy for their beleaguered second-year manager Wednesday night, and cruised to a 7-0 win over the Giants at Citi Field, behind Jason Vargas’ first complete-game shutout in two years.

On the heels of Callaway failing to show trust in the team’s most accomplished starters, Vargas continued his surprising, and sudden, ascent into one of the rotation’s most reliable arms.
