When Jakson Reetz signed with the Mets in November, it wasn’t heralded as anything more than a depth signing. With Francisco Alvarez firmly ensconced in the starting catcher’s role and Luis Torrens being a perfectly cromulent backup in 2024, Reetz was signed for some Triple-A depth in case the Kevin Parada experiment continued to flail.
However, with a broken hamate bone for Alvarez putting him out for 6-8 weeks, Reetz finds himself in the catbird seat to make the Opening Day roster as the backup for Torrens, as long as his spring doesn’t completely fall apart.
