Jacob deGrom hyperextended his pitch count in his first inning back Sunday afternoon.
Making his first start since May 2, with a trip to the disabled list for a hyperextended elbow in between, deGrom threw 45 pitches to get three outs in the first inning against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.
With deGrom’s spot due up in the top of the second, manager Mickey Callaway opted to pull the starter and pinch-hit Luis Guillorme. Robert Gsellman relieved him on the mound in the bottom of the second.
The Mets announced deGrom left the game for precautionary reasons, citing his hefty pitch count and a 59-minute rain delay, as opposed to an injury.
