WASHINGTON — Cy Young and Not So Young conspired to turn Thursday afternoon into another celebratory Mets opener.
There was reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom, and his new $137.5 million contract, stifling the Nationals for six innings. And 36-year-old Robinson Cano, looking every bit like the offensive piece the Mets thought they were receiving last winter, delivered the offense. All of it.
Still kings of Opening Day, the Mets won 2-0 at Nationals Park, needing only five hits against Max Scherzer and Washington’s bullpen. It was the Mets’ 38th victory in 58 openers, still by far a major league best.
