The new documentary “Ted Williams: The Greatest Hitter Who Ever Lived,” which debuts July 23 on PBS, is excellent. It provides a warts-and-all portrayal of one of the game’s most fascinating historical figures as we approach the 100th anniversary of his birth (August 30, 1918).

Yes, Nick Davis, the producer and director of this project, grew up in Greenwich Village supporting the Mets. And on the very day he agreed to do this project, the first tribute to a male athlete on PBS’ acclaimed “American Masters” series, he was suffering from a unique, Mets-centric affliction.
