Sandy Alderson’s announcement he was taking an immediate leave of absence as Mets general manager due to a recurrence of cancer wasn’t the only surprise to emerge from Tuesday’s press conference.
In Alderson’s absence — which likely will result in the 70-year-old never reclaiming the position — the Mets are using an unorthodox three-person team, with responsibilities shared among assistant GM John Ricco and special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya.
The seemingly indecisive stop-gap measure could make future decisions even more challenging, but Ricco countered that the group will be more effective than any individual would have been, if given ultimate authority.
