CHICAGO — Jacob deGrom lacked command and gave up a run in the first inning Tuesday night.
In other words, he had the Cubs right where he wanted them.
The lanky right-hander repeated his performance from the closeout game against the Dodgers in the NLDS by fighting his way through a tough Cubs lineup without his best stuff and this time allowed the Mets to come within one win of a World Series berth in a 5-2 victory at Wrigley Field Tuesday night.
Because just as in Los Angeles, deGrom seemed to get better as the game went on, allowing just two runs in seven innings — none after the fourth inning to earn his third win of the postseason.
