NEW YORK -- Once the envy of baseball, the Mets' starting-pitching depth is thinning by the day. Matt Harvey is suffering from symptoms consistent with thoracic outlet syndrome, according to general manager Sandy Alderson, and was deciding whether to undergo season-ending surgery. Harvey was also weighing a non-surgical injection treatment option.
The right-hander reportedly has decided on surgery. Multiple outlets reported on Friday that Harvey will undergo surgery in St. Louis with vascular specialist Dr. Robert Thompson. The operation involves removing a rib. Neither Harvey nor the team has confirmed the reports.
Thoracic outlet syndrome is a disorder caused by compressed nerves or blood vessels between the collarbone and rib cage.
