As had been their custom for two straight games that both extended into extra innings, the Mets and Pirates found themselves tied Sunday at Citi Field.
But then the rains came. And they apparently washed away much of the Mets’ knowledge of how to play baseball.
After play resumed following a 42-minute sixth-inning delay, the Mets meekly completed an at-bat then endured a nightmare to rival most pickles and rotgut liquor-induced nightmares. Front and center was reliever Bobby Parnell, who for the second time in three games was booed by the crowd as he exited mid-inning.
Parnell lasted two-thirds of an inning, surrendered two hits, two walks and four runs, two unearned as a result of his own throwing error.
