Harvey chooses season-ending surgery

The surgery will be performed next week by preeminent TOS surgeon Dr. Thompson in St. Louis, Boras told ESPN.com.

The surgery will remove a rib that is constricting nerves and blood vessels - that travel through his shoulder - where the rib connects to the upper spine. Removing the rib creates space and alleviates the constriction, which will restore feeling in Harvey's pitching arm and fingers.

The alternative, which is a nerve-blocking, Botox injection, Boras said Friday, and Sandy Alderson explained Thursday, would be only a short-term fix, with surgery still a likely possibility.

"The doctors clearly recommended that he have this done, mainly so that he can be ready for 2017," Boras told ESPN.
