The Mets and Cubs never got into serious trade talks last winter, as much as GM Sandy Alderson wanted to see if he could pry Addison Russell away from Theo Epstein. And Alderson admits it probably worked out best this way for both teams.
“We’re happy we didn’t make a trade," Alderson said on Friday, “And they probably feel the same way."
Left unsaid is whether Alderson would have given up Noah Syndergaard for Russell, had the Cubs been willing to deal their young shortstop prospect.

It was never clear, from talking to Mets people at the time, but they had to know it would take Syndergaard, or perhaps a then-healthy Zack Wheeler, to make a deal for Russell.
