It’s rather extraordinary to hear the manager of the team with the best record in baseball say that a win in April “was something we desperately needed,’’ but you could understand why Terry Collins felt that way on Saturday.
These may not be the ’98 Yankees, but they’re still the Yankees, and they’d whipped on up on the Mets on Friday, putting Collins’ ballclub in the position of having to prove its 11-game winning streak was more than a gift from some bad teams in the NL East.
At least that’s how the Mets seemed to be feeling.
