PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets shortstop prospect Gavin Cecchini has been administered a cortisone injection for inflammation in his left shoulder. He nonetheless expects to be outdoors with teammates in about a week.
Cecchini was diagnosed with a shoulder strain and shut down after four games in the Arizona Fall League. The injury cost him a chance to participate in the Premier 12 Tournament in Asia this offseason with other prospects from around baseball.
Cecchini, 22, was selected 12th overall in 2012. He hit .317/.377/.442 with Double-A Binghamton last season. He is expected to open this season with Triple-A Las Vegas.
