Fredi Gonzalez emerges as Mets bench coach candidate

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Fredi Gonzalez’s resume speaks loudly in the Mets’ search for a new bench coach.

The 55-year-old Gonzalez has managed the Marlins and Braves within the NL East, and served as the third base coach for Miami the last three seasons. And now Gonzalez is a candidate to become new manager Carlos Beltran’s top lieutenant, according to an industry source.

Team officials spoke to Gonzalez about the job in recent days and are expected to interview him in New York following the GM Meetings, which conclude Thursday.

Gonzalez joins Jerry Narron as a known candidate for the bench coach opening.
