After the end of the 2024 season, the Mets found themself in a position of needing to massively overhaul their rotation. Three major members of their rotation (Manaea, Severino, and Quintana) were all free agents. Christian Scott, one of their top prospects who debuted during the season, had to undergo Tommy John surgery and was projected to miss the entirety of 2025. And Paul Blackburn, who they acquired at the trade deadline, suffered a freak back injury in August and was still a question mark in the Mets’ plans. While they had Peterson and Megill under contract still, and Senga was coming back, they had a lot of spots to fill.
