After two and a half months on the shelf due to a thumb injury, Francisco Álvarez rejoins the Mets today. In a corresponding move, Tomás Nido was designated for assignment.
Since Álvarez landed on the Injured List on April 20th, the Mets have tried a number of combinations at catcher. Omar Narváez, last year’s free agent signing, got the bulk of the starting time initially but, after performing poorly on both sides of the ball (including a 12 OPS+), was designated for assignment on May 31st.
That same day, the Mets acquired Luis Torrens for $100,000 from the Yankees.
