The Mets looked somewhat overmatched early in the game by Yu Darvish, while Taijuan Walker—who never seemed to get comfortable on the Petco Park mound—had to pitch around trouble early, stranding two runners in each of the first two innings.
In the third, that trouble finally crossed the plate. Walker walked Manny Machado to lead off the frame. With one out, Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a high fly ball to deep center. Mason Williams seemed to have the ball lined up as he leapt at the wall, and, while it would have taken an excellent catch, the ball bounced out of his glove and over the wall for a two-run home run.
