The Mets dropped the series finale to the Nationals this afternoon, 12-9. At the end of the second inning, it looked like it was going to be a really ugly day for the Mets; down 5-1 with Max Scherzer on the mound, the game looked out of control early on.
Zack Wheeler simply did not have his best stuff today. Over four and two-thirds innings, Wheeler gave up four hits, seven walks, and seven earned runs. Relievers Tim Peterson and Luis Avilan contributed two and three earned runs apiece, respectively, digging the Mets an eleven run deficit by the middle of the seventh inning.
