A Wednesday day game represented a quick turnaround for a Mets team reeling from a devastating ninth-inning collapse last night. And the Nationals jumped out quickly in the series finale, as with two outs and none on in the bottom of the second, Zack Wheeler surrendered consecutive singles to Gerardo Parra, pitcher Anibal Sanchez and Trea Turner to plate the first run of the game. Wheeler escaped further damage by getting Anthony Rendon to fly out with the bases loaded.
While Wheeler danced around further trouble—the Nationals left eight men on in Wheeler’s five arduous inning—the Mets used the long ball to pull ahead.
