Aaron Nola had himself quite a day in the first game of today’s doubleheader, but the Mets made a dramatic comeback in the seventh inning before winning it in extra innings on a walk-off single by Dominic Smith.
The game was quickly established as both a memorable and historic one, as Nola tied Tom Seaver’s record of consecutive strikeout record by punching ten straight Mets batters between the first and fourth innings. While he was not able to surpass Seaver’s record, he did end the day with a whopping twelve strikeouts over 5.1 scoreless innings. As if that wasn’t enough, he was also the major catalyst for the Phillies with the bats, getting two booming hits against Taijuan Walker (who otherwise had a very impressive start, giving up one run and striking out five in five innings).
