WASHINGTON — This was a case of going from nuts to Soup.
Terry Collins may have seemed crazy Tuesday for removing ace Jacob deGrom — a good-hitting pitcher — at 82 pitches from a game the Mets trailed by one run in the seventh inning and then summoning someone other than Michael Cuddyer to hit, but Eric Campbell rewarded the manager’s faith in him.
Campbell delivered a two-run single that scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the Mets’ 7-2 victory over the Nationals.
The Mets (49-45) will have a chance to win the series on Wednesday, when Noah Syndergaard faces Jordan Zimmermann in the afternoon finale.
