Early injuries shouldn’t send the Mets to Panic City

This article should be prefaced with one thing: It was not written to diminish the injuries the Mets have faced so far in camp.

Since pitchers and catchers reported, two rotation mainstays in Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas and Nick Madrigal, a favorite to be a utility infielder, have gone down with various degrees of injury that will keep them off of the Opening Day roster. In Madrigal’s case, it might put his entire season at risk. Despite that, filling the roster with veterans to replace them—veterans who will be stuck on the roster after these injuries are cleared up—may end up being a shortsighted decision, and relying on the depth that David Stearns and the rest of the front office built in the offseason makes more sense, even if it isn’t as satisfying.
