LOS ANGELES — Lopsided losses will occur in any season, even winning ones. The baseball calendar is simply too long to avoid them. But good teams, ones that aspire to make the playoffs, do not suffer many of those shoulder-slumping, head-scratching, unsettling defeats.
Over 40 percent of the way through the 2017 season, the Mets have endured perhaps too many crooked losses. A 12-0 drubbing by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night threatened to push toward the top of that unceremonious list. It dropped their record to 31-39, matching a season low-water mark.
