NEW YORK – Manager Terry Collins has received no shortage of congratulatory phone calls and text messages since the New York Mets won the National League pennant on Wednesday at Wrigley Field.
One phone call particularly tickled Collins.
Don Newcombe, a four-time All-Star with the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1949 through 1955, reached out to Collins on Friday.
Newcombe, 89, pitched in three World Series with Brooklyn.
Said Collins: “I said, ‘Newk, how’s the World Series?’ He said, ‘It’s the greatest experience you’ll ever have in baseball.’
“I got off the phone and I told my wife, ‘There are a lot of people who aren’t going to understand what an important phone call that was.
