The announcement Dillon Gee was making a cameo in the Mets’ ever-changing starting rotation on Sunday didn’t just catch fans and the media off guard.
Gee wasn’t expecting it, either.
“I was fairly surprised, just because I thought we were scrapping the six-man [rotation] and I was going back to the bullpen,” Gee, who was informed Thursday he would start Sunday’s game, said after the Mets’ 5-3, 11-inning loss to the Braves on Saturday. “I was surprised, but I’m glad I’m getting a start. Let’s roll with it.”
The plan, as general manager Sandy Alderson explained it on Friday, is for the Mets to use Gee as a spot starter in weeks when they have off days.
