Derek Shelton’s calm demeanor in the face of turbulence is a selling point to any team considering him for manager, says a former boss.
“A common phrase you hear today about players is ‘slow heartbeat’ and I think he falls into that category as a potential manager,” Hall of Famer Paul Molitor told The Post on Thursday. “Things don’t get too fast for him.”
Shelton served as Molitor’s bench coach with the Twins in 2018 and retained the job this season under Rocco Baldelli, who guided the team to 101 victories as a rookie manager. And now Shelton is among the remaining candidates for the Mets managerial vacancy, part of a known list that includes Nationals first-base coach Tim Bogar, ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez, former All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran and possibly Brewers bench coach Pat Murphy, who has received multiple interviews with the club, according to an industry source.
