He lacked the grandeur of Tom Seaver, the sex appeal of Mike Piazza and Keith Hernandez and the highlight-film explosiveness of Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden. But David Wright belongs on any Mets Mount Rushmore because, in addition to his elite production, he possessed a quality that endeared him most of all to Mets fans.
Wright got it.
The third baseman, who arrived at Shea Stadium in 2004 as a highly touted prospect and will depart Citi Field later this month as a franchise icon, grasped early and often what it meant to be a homegrown star for a beloved big-market franchise.
