PHILADELPHIA — David Wright made a DiMaggio-esque return to the scene, causing jaws to drop in Monday’s second inning at Citizens Bank Park.
On the third pitch he faced, after 115 games missed, Wright blasted Adam Morgan’s belt-high fastball into the second deck in left field, bringing a wide smile from the Mets captain as he returned to the dugout.
A different flood of emotions had hit Wright earlier, hearing fans chant his name during pregame.
“I had to be careful, I almost pulled a Wilmer Flores out there. You try to keep your emotions in check,” Wright said on a night the Mets set a franchise record with eight homers and hammered the Phillies 16-7 for a fourth straight victory.
