They've been swearing for two weeks that it means nothing to them. Despite the hype, they insisted the Mets were just another opponent on the road to October and the battle for Big Apple bragging rights was blather for bar rooms.
Then the Yankees went out last night and played as though they believed their own clippings.
With the Bronx rocking with excitement over the first New York intra-city baseball game of merit in 40 years, the Mets, and not the Yankees, sported all the emotion and intensity and received splendid pitching from Dave Mlicki en route to a 6-0 triumph.
