DIt means the Mets will get a compensation pick in next June’s draft if Murphy signs elsewhere. But more importantly, it means the Mets can begin their off-season.
The Mets had been in a holding pattern, waiting for Murphy to decide. If he took the one-year dead, it would have eaten up a sizeable chunk of the Mets available payroll. It would have severely impacted their plans. Now they can move on.
As for Daniel Murphy, it is likely his agent spent the past week calling around to gauge interest in his client.
