Cuban slugger Yulieski Gourriel to privately work out for Mets

Yulieski Gourriel is set to audition for the Mets.

The highly regarded Cuban third baseman will soon work out privately for team officials, according to general manager Sandy Alderson — who is keeping all options open at the position with David Wright likely finished for the season following surgery for a herniated disk in his neck.

“We’re going to do our due diligence on that player,” Alderson said Tuesday, referring to Gourriel. “We have made arrangements to do that. At the same time, that player hasn’t seen live pitching for weeks, if not months.

“It’s not clear how long a player in that situation would take to be ready, and of course there is the investment and all the other issues and making an evaluation based on workouts primarily — and not game competition.
