Could Frank Viola replace Dan Warthen as Mets pitching coach?

Dan Warthen has a wonderfully dry sense of humor, even if it occasionally gets him in trouble -- as in John Maine is a "habitual liar," for those who recall that hullabaloo.

Warthen, who ascended to the major league staff with the 3 a.m. ET firing of Willie Randolph and Rick Peterson back in June 2008, this season matches Mel Stottlemyre (1984-93) for the second-longest tenure of any Mets pitching coach -- 10 seasons. In franchise history, only one pitching coach enjoyed a longer stint: Rube Walker, from 1968 through 1981.

But if the expiration on Terry Collins' managerial career with the Mets is the end of this season, it seems entirely possible that Warthen could be a casualty as well.
