Close Call at the Plate Leaves the Mets With Regret

DETROIT — It happened too quickly for Jay Bruce to absorb: the two-out, ninth-inning single by Travis d’Arnaud that sent Bruce, the potential tying run, heading home from second; J. D. Martinez’s muscular, on-target throw from right field; the dusty slide and the tag by Detroit catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia.

The plate umpire, Tony Randazzo, called Bruce out. The Mets did not challenge the ruling, ending a night that featured a short, ineffective start from Logan Verrett and a rally from a five-run deficit. The Mets had managed a rare hit with a runner in scoring position but still lost, 6-5, to the Tigers on Saturday.
