Clay Holmes will be the starter for the Mets on Opening Day, according to reporting from Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He becomes the 31st different pitcher to take the ball for the Mets on Opening Day in franchise history.
The Mets signed the two-time All-Star to a three-year contract this offseason to be a member of the rotation, converting from a reliever to a starting pitcher. Thus far, Holmes has rewarded the Mets for taking that chance on him by dazzling in his new role in spring training, pitching 9 2⁄3 scoreless innings across three Grapefruit League appearances with 13 strikeouts.
