Yoenis Cespedes had worked out at Citi Field the previous day and gave a thumbs up on his availability for the Mets’ game with the Braves on Tuesday.
Cespedes held up his end. But for much of the night, the rest of the offense was all thumbs.
“We just didn’t get anybody on base in front of him,” manager Mickey Callaway said.
Cespedes homered as part of a three-hit night and threw out a runner at home, but he wasn’t enough to overcome the youthful Braves whose 3-2 victory pulled them within a half game of the first-place Mets in the National League East.
