WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Mets officially welcomed back a familiar face Thursday, when Carlos Gomez arrived at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie on a minor league deal.
“It’s a dream, coming back to the team where you started, where … everything started in my career,’’ said Gomez, who was signed with the Mets in 2002 and made his major league debut with the team five years later.
Gomez said he had at least one other minor league offer but chose the Mets because of his history with the franchise. He was nearly traded back to the Mets in 2015, but after Wilmer Flores was seen crying on the field after news of the impending trade broke during a game, the Mets backed off the trade, citing Gomez’s medicals.
