Callaway to emphasize communication with players

Mets manager Mickey Callaway is stressing the importance of communication as he enters his first spring training as a big-league skipper.

Callaway plans to play an active role with players on the team -- an approach that stems from his own experience studying managers during his time as a player under then-Rangers manager Buck Showalter and as pitching coach of the Cleveland Indians under manager Terry Francona, he said in an interview with Mike Puma of the New York Post.

"He cared about his players," Callaway said of Showalter. "He communicated with his players. He made sure he was around.
