Callaway: Flores could eat into Gonzalez' playing time against righties

Wilmer Flores was already expected to play first base against left-handed pitching, but Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Thursday night that Flores could also start against some right-handers.

"Wilmer deserves to play, and not just against lefties," Callaway said.

Flores is a career .274/.318/.520 hitter against left-handers, and crushed them in 2017 -- hitting .291/.309/.553 against them.

And while he struggled against right-handers earlier in his career, he posted very respectable numbers against them in 2017, hitting .262/.306/.459 with 11 HR in 233 at-bats.

Translation? He's likely a better option than Adrian Gonzalez, whether it's a lefty or righty who's on the mound.
