With their victory over the Phillies on Wednesday night — their sixth straight — and the Nationals’ loss to the Padres, New York now holds a 6 1/2-game lead over second-place Washington.
At the start of the season — and up until about a month ago, when general manager Sandy Alderson started acquiring impact players — the Nationals were the heavy favorites to win the NL East. But with time running out and the Mets continuing to roll right along, the Nats are in serious trouble.
