MIAMI — Depth wins. Even with a consistently shaky Jason Vargas on the mound.
The Mets are off to a 4-1 start because they have more depth this season and that depth came through again in a 6-5 win over the Triple-A Marlins Tuesday night at Marlins Park with Dom Smith getting his first start of the season at first base.
Smith once again beat the shift as he knocked in a run and scored a run in the Mets’ five-run first inning. See, Pete Alonso doesn’t have to start every game. But it was close.
