SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — There is a good chance next season’s Mets closer is already on the roster, but don’t ask general manager Brodie Van Wagenen for anything more specific.
The perfect outcome for Van Wagenen would be Edwin Diaz arriving at spring training miraculously fixed from his disastrous 2019 season, but predicting that result might be as irresponsible as calling the Mets, as they stand, the team to beat in the NL East.
“We don’t play our first game until the end of March,” Van Wagenen said Wednesday at the GM meetings when asked to identify his closer for 2020.
