Brandon Nimmo takes another major step in return to Mets

Brandon Nimmo is knocking on the door.

The Mets outfielder had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Syracuse Tuesday at Lehigh Valley. He played five innings in center field and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and was hit by pitch.

“That makes us feel more optimistic about him coming back and helping us, because we can use him,” manager Mickey Callaway said before the Mets beat the Indians 9-2 at Citi Field. “He’s a great player, he’s a bat, he can play center field, he can play left and right, and that versatility and that on-base [percentage] and that power he brings is very valuable.
