NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- With left-hander Jonathon Niese headed to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the New York Mets are eyeing a reunion with right-hander Bartolo Colon. And there is "mutual interest" in closing a deal, a team official said.
The Mets were interested in re-signing Colon anyway for a bullpen role. But using Niese to acquire Neil Walker from the Pittsburgh Pirates opens a rotation vacancy until Zack Wheeler returns from Tommy John surgery in June or July.
Colon would join Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz in the rotation to open the season.
