While saving the day for the Mets Saturday night, Alex Torres wore head-turning headgear he hopes will save him from serious injury.
Torres wore a two-piece protective hat when he came in and struck out Christian Yelich to earn his first career save in the Mets’ 5-4 win over the Marlins.
“I’ve seen a lot of pitchers in the Major Leagues get hit in the head. I don’t want to wait for that to happen to me,” Torres told reporter Joe Trezza (April 19).
Torres was in the Tampa Bay bullpen in 2013 when teammate Alex Cobb got a concussion after being struck by a line drive by the Royals’ Eric Hosmer.
